This is where Night Club Musical all started in November 2008 in Phoenix. A month earlier I was about to retire from the Air Force and had a couple of weeks off at home before the official retirement ceremony. At the time my regular mixes were on Mixdepot & I gained a small following- about 300-500 downloads a mix. Decent considering the people I hung out with didn’t listen to ‘Trance’ (or as they called it- ‘techno’). The mixes that really stood out on Mixdepot were “Driving Eva Mendes” from 2007 and “Grounded” from summer 2008. They both had around 5,000 downloads in months time. I was only promoting them on Myspace, but I couldn’t figure out how to get the full mixes on the myspace site to make it easier for listeners. There had to be a way to reach a bigger audience or get my mixes on different music services.
I bring up the same issue with my wife and she says “Why don’t you try podcasting?” WHAT? *My thinking: I got to be approved by some music service (Itunes). Aint gonna happen. How do I even get my mixes on there? I’m playing other peoples music. They gonna shoot that down quick.* Wife says “Sweetheart go to the bookstore and see if they got a book about podcasting.” Naw, she didn’t say that. She’s from the Northeast. She said “Take your ass to Barnes & Noble and find a podcasting for dummies book or something like that. You aint got shit else to do.” I did. I found a laminated one page instructions for about $4.99 on how to get a podcast going (keep in mind it wasn’t like iTunes was out there telling everybody how to get your stuff on their site). So, I followed their directions and the key was finding a site like Libsyn to host the music to submit to iTunes. I had no idea what that was all about, but I followed the instructions step-by-step. Now I need to name my music mix series. No idea ( I had already done a test mix called “Back to Me” as a nod to finishing 20 years in the service). I didn’t want a cheesy name like Tranceformer, Trance4Life, etc. I mean a 90’s DJ name of bigdirty (it’s one word dammit) was cheesy enough. My six year-old daughter was all about “High School Musical.” That Zac Efron is a handsome man though. I was driving her to school one day in November and said “What if there was a broadway play with nothing but vocal trance music. That would be tight.” NIGHT CLUB MUSICAL. (to be continued) There are a few tracks on here that have held up in time over the last 11 years. The description for this mix probably still holds true today when you head to the club. I thought I was being funny with a lot of truth added in. Some of it made me cringe.
